REU FAQ

  1. Eligibility: The REU program is open to every undergraduate student who is a US citizen or US permanent resident.
  2. Stipends: The $6000 stipend is paid evenly over June and July, at the end of each month. No travel, housing, or meal funds are provided.

Direct Deposit: The stipend may be paid via a check. Georgia Tech students may instead have the funds deposited to their bank account. To do so they will need to set up direct deposit with the Bursar's Office. Please note that if you are a Georgia Tech student employee and your paycheck is being direct deposited, you must sign up separately to have the REU stipend direct deposited, as explained on the Bursar's Office website.

Non-GT students will have to set up a vendor profile with Accounts Payable to receive direct deposit or can pick up their checks from Iris Hamilton or Malcom Emerson in the School of Mathematics.

  3. Housing: Students who live off campus receive full stipend, and take care of housing costs themselves.
On-campus housing: Current GT students must apply for summer housing through the online housing site.
Non-GT students can live on-campus through the summer Intern Lodging Program. ($40.77 person per night/apartment style. Lodging rate includes single occupancy bedroom in apartment style accommodations with shared bathroom.) The cost of housing is paid directly by the School of Mathematics but will be deducted from the REU Stipend, and the application is done via the School of Mathematics. Space is limited. Available date range: from May 19th 2024 through August 2nd, 2024. Other housing options include living in a fraternity on-campus or airbnb near campus.
  4. Transportation: Temporary parking permits will cost $15.00/day, $45.00/week, $115/month. Another option to consider is the prorated annual permit, which would start the date of purchase and expire on August 14. Depending on parking period, this permit may be the better option.
  5. Courses: Concurrent enrollment in one summer school class is acceptable, but enrollment in two or more courses is not permitted.
  6. Upon request REU participants can get library access. Here is a list of shared study spaces near Skiles (the Math building).
  7. Georgia Tech REU participants need to take Math 4698 (research assistantship) in order to get paid. The course must be audited, rather than taken for credit. The course will appear on the student's transcript.
  8. At the end of the REU program, students are expected to provide written reports on their work and participate in a poster session.
