Permits and Waitlists

This page contains information and policies about registration, permits, waitlists for MATH courses at Georgia Tech.

You can use the menu below to navigate to the relevant section.

Dates and Deadlines

  • Registration for all Summer 2025 sessions runs from Monday, April 14 until 4:00pm on Friday, May 16.
  • Phase I Registration for Fall 2025 runs from Monday, April 14 until 4:00pm on Friday, May 16. Incoming freshmen will also get a first chance to register during their FASET session.
  • Phase II Registration for Fall 2025 runs from Monday, August 11 until 4:00pm on Friday, August 22.

  • The 4-credit restriction will lift at 5pm on the first day of Fall classes, Monday, August 18.
  • Most major restrictions for Fall courses will be lifted on April 28 or May 5; please see the relevant section below for more details. Summer courses are not major restricted.
  • Permit requests for Summer courses received after midnight on May 15 or for Fall courses received after midnight on August 21 may not be processed.

Core Course Information and Restrictions

  • The 4-credit restriction: For Spring and Fall semesters, the School of Math does not allow any undergraduate student to be registered and/or waitlisted for more than 4 credit hours of core math courses at one time during Phase I registration.
    • The only exception to this rule is the combination of MATH 1551 + MATH 1554. Individual exceptions will not be granted under any circumstances.
    • Students who violate this restriction may be removed by the registrar from the course(s) which they last added in order to comply with the restriction.
    • This restriction will be lifted at 5pm on the first day of classes. After the restriction is lifted, students may register or waitlist for additional core courses as space is available.
    • The courses included in this restriction are MATH 1113, 1550, 1551, 1552, 1553, 1554, 1564, 1555, 1711, 1712, 2550, 2551, 2552, 2561, and 2562.
    • The 4-credit restriction is not enforced for any Summer term.
  • Lecture and Studio Linking: Some courses at the lower level consist of several different components. A student must add matching sections of all required components of a course in the same registration attempt in order to successfully register for the course.
    • MATH 1113, 1711, 1712, 2550, 2551, 2552, 2561, 2562, and 2603 have two components: Lecture and Studio. Lecture sections are labeled with a letter, and Studio sections with a letter and number; matching lecture and studio sections use the same letter.
    • In addition to Lecture and Studio components, MATH 1551, 1552, 1553, and 1554 have a required common exam block, section EXM.
    • Examples of successful combinations are: MATH 1113 G + MATH 1113 G02, or MATH 1552 A + MATH 1552 A01 + MATH 1552 EXM.
    • MATH 1499: Students who place into MATH 1499 + MATH 1551 must register for MATH 1499 before or simultaneously with MATH 1551. Students who place into these courses may not drop MATH 1499 and remain enrolled in MATH 1551.
    • Two-credit courses (MATH 1551, 1553, 2550) look "backwards" on the registration system. That is, the studio and lecture appear to be swapped, but the "lecture" section meets twice per week and the "studios" meet once per week. Regardless of the label in the system, sections named with only a letter are lectures, and those named with a letter and number are studios.
    • Some studio sections may have cohort restrictions in place.  We do NOT make exceptions to these restrictions under any circumstances. Please do not email the academic office asking to add to these sections.
      • In Fall 2025, the following studio sections are restricted to students in the Explore LLC:
        • MATH 1551 L06
        • MATH 1554 A06
        • MATH 2552 C06

Major and Graduate Restrictions

Some upper division and graduate MATH courses are restricted to certain majors during some or all of registration. The School of Math does NOT override major restrictions for any reason.

  • Undergraduate courses:
    • MATH 2801 is restricted to undergraduate First and Second year MATH majors. This restriction never lifts.
    • If offered, the following Core/List A courses will be restricted to MATH majors for the first 2 weeks of Phase I registration each term. All students will be able to register or waitlist for these courses after restrictions are lifted and in Phase II.
      • MATH 2106*, 3235, 3236, 4107, 4108, 4210, 4221, 4317, 4318, 4320, 4347, 4431, 4432, 4441, 4541, 4640, 4641
      • For Fall 2025, restrictions on these courses will be lifted around 2pm on Monday, April 28.
      • *MATH 2106 G will be restricted to MATH majors until the beginning of Phase II to allow incoming MATH majors to register during FASET.
    •  The following Core/List A courses are initially restricted to MATH majors, then allow CS and CM majors to register before opening to all students.
      • MATH 3406 (Sections G and L are restricted to MATH from 4/14-4/28; section M is open to MATH/CS/CM from the beginning of Phase I)
      • MATH 4022 (All sections)
      • MATH 4032 (All sections)
      • MATH 4150 (All sections)
      • For Fall 2025, CS and CM majors will be allowed to register beginning around 2pm on Monday, April 28. All major restrictions will be lifted around noon on Monday, May 5.
    •  The following courses are restricted to specific majors for the first 2 weeks of registration, as noted:
      • MATH 2603 (Restricted to IE)
      • MATH 3012 (Sections B and E restricted to MATH, all other sections restricted to CS/CM)
      • MATH 3215 (Restricted to CS/CM/BINF)
      • All major restrictions for these courses will be lifted around 2pm on Monday, April 28.
  • Graduate Courses:
    • MATH 6001: Restricted to graduate students in the MATH department. This restriction never lifts.
    • MATH 6112: Restricted to MATH, ACO, and STAT majors until around 9am the Friday before classes start.
    • MATH 6337: Restricted to graduate MATH majors. This restriction never lifts, but graduate students in other programs who have earned an A in MATH 4317 or a similar proof-based analysis course and have the instructor's permission may request a permit by emailing the academic office. Students who do not meet these criteria are encouraged to enroll in MATH 6579 (Measure Theory for Scientists and Engineers).
    • MATH 6640, 6643: Restricted to MATH graduate students for the first 2 weeks of Phase I. Major restrictions will lift around 2pm on Monday, April 28.
    • The following courses are restricted to students in the QCF program. These restrictions never lift, but a small number of permits might be granted to non-QCF graduate students in Phase 2, depending on availability.
      • MATH 6635, 6759, 6767, 6769, 6785
    • Graduate MATH courses not listed above are not major restricted, and any graduate student may register. Undergraduate-level prerequisites for these courses are not enforced, though students are strongly encouraged to carefully consider their preparation.
    • Undergraduate MATH majors wishing to enroll in a graduate MATH course should consult with their advisor on their preparation to do so and the process for requesting a permit. Such permits will not be issued until Phase II of registration, and do not guarantee a seat in the course. Undergraduates in other majors are not typically allowed to enroll in graduate MATH courses; students with a very strong background may contact the academic office to inquire. Undergraduate students are not allowed to enroll in QCF courses, regardless of major.

Waitlists

  • General information about waitlists and step-by-step instructions can be fount on the  Registrar's webpage.
  • The School of Math relies heavily on the waitlist functionality of the Registration System. If a section has no available seats, students will be able to register for the waitlist of the section. If seats become available, the system will automatically issue a notification with a permission to register through official GT email to the next student on the waitlist. Notifications are valid for a time period of 12hrs; after that time, the permission to register expires and the seat will be given to the next person on the waitlist. The School of Math cannot override the expiration of a notification; students who miss their opportunity must rejoin the waitlist and will not be reprioritized.
  • The waitlist system will start issuing notifications to register after all time tickets have opened in each registration phase, and the last notification will be issued at 4pm ET the Wednesday before registration closes in Phase II. After 4pm ET, the waitlist option is no longer available in Buzzport/OSCAR. The waitlists will be purged on the second-to-last day of registration at 9 am, and at this time, there is free-for-all registration (no waitlisting).
  • Waitlists from Phase I will always be carried over to Phase II for Fall and Spring semesters.
  • Courses with lecture and studio components only have waitlists for the STUDIO sections (those labeled with both a letter and number). Waitlists will never be added to lecture sections; students who recieve a waitlist notification for the studio section will be able to register for the corresponding lecture as well. Waitlists for 1000- and 2000-level courses may not be added until Phase II, especially in Fall terms.
  • The waitlist system works on a first-come-first-serve basis, but we reserve the right to give limited waitlist priority to degree candidates and MATH majors. Graduating seniors (in any major) with active Online Aplications for Graduation will automatically be considered for waitlist priority.
  • Students may not be registered for one section of a course and waitlisted for another. Students who wish to waitlist for a different section of a course must drop their current seat; in this case the School of Math cannot guarantee a seat in either section.
  • Registering on a waitlist does not guarantee a seat in the course. You will not be registered in the course until you receive a notification and register for the course during the 12 hour period.
  • Please note: You MUST go through the waitlist process in order to register for any course which has an active, non-empty waitlist, even if the system displays open seats. Open seats are always reserved for students on the waitlist.

Permits

In some situations, the School of Math may issue permits to help students register for MATH courses. Please read the following guidelines carefully.

  • The School of Math DOES NOT ISSUE closed course overloads. Please do not email the academic office asking for an overload. Students wishing to join a full course should join the waitlist, if one is available.
  • Students who have completed the prerequisites of a course but receive a "Prerequisite and Test Score Error" may request an override. Please include proof of completion of the prerequisite in your request.
  • Some courses are permit restricted (such as undergraduate research), or level restricted (undergraduates taking graduate courses, or vice versa).
    • MATH 2699/4698/4699/4999: Students should make arrangements with the faculty member they intend to work with in advance. Then you and the faculty member should contact the academic office; to process a permit we will need your GTID and the faculty member's agreement to work on the project. Please note that for variable-credit courses, your registration will default to one credit and you may need to adjust it in OSCAR.
    • Graduate students (in any major) wishing to take an undergraduate course:
      • At the 1-2000 level: Please contact us to inquire. Please include the specific lecture and studio section you are interested in, and note that we'll need your advisor's permission for you to enroll.
      • At the 3000-level: Please contact us for a prerequisite override, if necessary.
      • At the 4000-level: Graduate students may register for any section ending in G (e.g., MATH 4317 AG), without a permit. These sections do not enforce prerequisites, though major restrictions apply. Graduate students may not register for sections ending in U. Capacity in graduate sections of 4000-level courses may not be increased until late in registration, as the School of Math reserves the right to prioritize undergraduate students in undergraduate courses.
  • Section Lettering and Restrictions: Some sections of MATH courses are restricted to specific populations of students. These restrictions never drop, and we will not override them under any circumstances. Please do not request such an exception.
    • In the summer, SF sections are for incoming iGniTe students.
    • All HP or HP1 sections are restricted to students in the Honors Program.
    • Sections beginning with R are for GTE students only.
    • Sections QHS, Q and Q3 are video sections. Main campus students cannot register for these video sections.
    • At the 4000-level, sections ending in U (such as AU) are for undergraduate students, and sections ending in G (such as BG) are for graduate students.

To request a permit, please contact the Academic Office (see below). In order to expedite your request, please be sure to include your 9-digit GTID number and the course name, number, and section. Please allow up to 3 days for a response, especially during busy registration periods. Not all requests will be granted.

Please Note:

  • We recommend that students register for required Mathematics courses during Phase I or FASET if possible. We may not able to accommodate individual schedule, section, or instructor preferences.
  • Per institute policy, students may not attend classes for which they are not registered.
  • The School of Mathematics cannot register students for classes.
  • The School of Mathematics will not sign any change of major forms adding the mathematics major during the first 3 weeks of Phase I registration (while major restrictions are in effect).
