Idaho National Laboratory, Operations Research Postdoctoral Research Associate (posted December 9, 2018)
The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a well-qualified Postdoctoral Associate in operations research, data science, applied math, computer science or comparable discipline for the Data and Software Sciences Department. In this position, you will focus on formulating and applying mathematical modeling and optimization methods to develop and interpret information that assists management with decision making, policy formulation, and/or other managerial/R&D functions for complex, resilient energy systems and critical infrastructure. You will play a key role in exciting research that 1) addresses critical and complex long-term challenges for overlapping sectors of critical infrastructure (e.g., power, transportation, water / wastewater, communications, supply chain considerations) and 2) evaluates a variety of energy challenges in biofuels, electrification of the grid, etc. in an effort to modernize the energy delivery system, enhance resilience of energy infrastructure, and identify best path to recover from disruptions to the energy system.

Associate Principal Scientist provides strategic development and use of cutting-edge mathematical and economic models to enhance understanding of vaccines and infectious diseases, to quantify, and to communicate the value of Merck’s vaccines to patients, providers, payers, and policy makers. The scientist provides strategic and technical leadership using model-based scientific and business insights across all phases of drug and vaccine development. In addition, she/he serves as the Economic & Data Sciences (EDS) lead for one or more value evidence teams responsible for generation of evidence, including development of health economic, disease, and other mathematical models to enable business and scientific insights for the product.
Among the preferred qualifications are a PhD and experience in the design and analysis of mathematical models of infectious diseases and vaccination.

The SCGSR program supports supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory/facility in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist for a period of 3 to 12 consecutive months—with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission.
