Change of Major - Mathematics MTH

Many students choose to change majors to Mathematics MTH. Others choose to keep their first major and add MTH as a second major. Students requesting a change of major or the addition of a second major must complete a Request for Change of Academic Major form. These forms are available online at Change of Major form.

Students with less than 60 hours earned credit are allowed one unrestricted change of major.*  The "Change of Major" form requires approval from the School of Mathematics. After 60 hours or upon subsequent major changes, change of major requests listing MTH as the new major will be permitted if all of the following are met:

  • The student's GPA is 2.5 or higher.
  • The student's GPA for math courses is 2.8 or higher.

Additionally, all students who wish to add or change to the mathematics major must attend a Change of Major info session - see below.

 

Change of Major Sessions Fall 2026

Change of major sessions will occur once each month in September, October, and November.  The sessions will be between 30 minutes and 1 hour depending on Q&A after a short presentation.  All sessions are in-person and students will need to check in with their BuzzCard.  

All sessions are in Skiles 268.  Please fill out the short registration form ahead of the session.

  • Friday, September 18 from 1 pm to 2 pm
  • Tuesday, October 13 from 11 am to 12 pm
  • Thursday, November 19 from 11 am to 12 pm

Math Double Major Common Questions

The Institute requires that students completing a double major complete at least 36 hours of credit for the secondary major that do not apply toward the primary major (the first awarded degree or the degree with lower required credits if both are granted in the same semester).  After satisfying this rule, any course appearing in the requirements of both majors may be counted in both majors.  A few common instances are listed below.

  • The Engineering/Science 3XXX/4XXX electives in the math major commonly double count for double majors with math and any other STEM degree
  • CS/Math double majors may use MATH 2106 in place of CS 2050 (but not the other way around)
  • CS/Math double majors take the sequence MATH 3235 + MATH 3236 to satisfy the probability & statistics requirements of both degrees.  CS/Math double majors will not be able to graduate with credit for MATH 3215 or MATH 3670.
  • Math/Physics double majors can double count the Math courses listed as Technical electives in the Physics degree with required Math courses or Math general electives.
