Advanced Standing Exams - Fall 2026

Advanced Standing Exams (ASEs) provide eligible Georgia Tech students with an opportunity to earn academic credit by demonstrating proficiency in the material covered in a course. More information on ASE is available at the website of the registrar

  1. The School of Mathematics will offer the following exams:
    • MATH 1551, 1552, 1553, 1554, 2550, 2551, 2552, 2603, 3012, 3215, and 3670.
    • Bridge to MATH 1554 (see below)
    • Bridge to MATH 2551 (see below)
  2. ASEs are not given for MATH 2106, 3235, 3236, 3406 or for 4000-level Math courses.

Exam information

  1. All ASEs are administered in person at a Georgia Tech campus.
  2. No remote testing options are available.
  3. Students must bring their Georgia Tech ID (BuzzCard).

  4. Once ASE application decisions have been communicated, students will receive exam instructions by email.

  5. In general, calculators and notes are not permitted.
  6. Practice exams, instructor information, and additional preparation materials are not provided.

  7. The topics tested on the Bridge to 1554 ASE are taken from selected sections of Linear Algebra and Its Applications (5th Edition) by David C. Lay. These include Sections 2.5, 2.8, 4.9, 6.4, 7.1–7.4, and 10.2.

  8. The material for the Bridge to 2551 ASE is limited to Chapter 16 of Thomas' Calculus: Early Transcendentals

Important dates:

  1. ASE applications are accepted from: August 24-September 20
  2. ASE payment deadline: September 20
  3. ASE application decision deadline: September 28
  4. ASEs will be held on October 9 from 5:00-7:00 PM in L1 classroom Howey Physics.
  5. Students needing to take the MATH ASE at a different time, either due to a conflict with a religious observance or institute-approved event, or because they are taking two ASEs, can do so on October 12 from 5:00-7:00 PM in 109 classroom Instructional Center. To register, fill out the make-up ASE online registration form and provide documentation for your schedule conflict with primary ASE date.
  6. Students will receive their ASE results by email on or after October 27.

Rules for Advanced Standing Exams:

  1. A student cannot take an ASE if they have taken the course at Georgia Tech and received any grade in the course, including a W.
  2. A student must be in good standing at the request date and at the exam date.
  3. A student must currently be enrolled in classes at Georgia Tech during the term of the advanced standing exam.
  4. Bridge to MATH 1554 and 2551 ASEs: These exams bridge the gap between MATH 1553/15X4 and MATH 1554 or MATH 2550/25X1 and MATH 2551 respectively.  They cover only the material which separates MATH 1554 from MATH 1553 or MATH 2551 from MATH 2550 respectively. Students must have credit already for one of these lower-credit courses and can only take these exams if they either
    1. transferred to Georgia Tech, and took the corresponding courses elsewhere, or
    2. took or received credit for the lower-credit versions at Georgia Tech, in a semester in which they were enrolled in a major only requiring the lower-credit course
  5. Students with prior knowledge of the content of MATH 1554/2551 but who do not meet the requirements listed in #4 should register for the regular MATH 1554/2551 ASE.
  6. A students cannot take more than 2 Advanced Standing Exams in Mathematics in a single term.
  7. Students may not use more than 9 credits of advanced standing to meet degree requirements.
  8. Students will not be allowed to take an examination for advanced standing in a course for which the prerequisite(s) has not been met. Courses in progress count for meeting a prerequisite.
  9. Students are ineligible to take the ASE if they have received a D, F, or W grade in any attempt at the prerequisite course, not just the most recent or best attempt.
  10. Students may attempt to receive credit via examination only once per course. This includes both Advanced Standing and New Student Placement Exams.  
  11. Enrollment in a course makes a student ineligible to apply for the ASE for that same course.

  12. A score of 70% (C) or higher is required to receive credit through the Advanced Standing Exam.

Applying to take an Advanced Standing Exam:

  1. To apply for the ASE, complete and submit the online registration form.
  2. To apply for the make-up ASE, complete and submit the make-up ASE online registration form.
  3. Submit your signed ASE form, payment details, course selection, and other necessary information through the online registration form. We are unable to accept these details via email to exams@math.gatech.edu.
  4. Your form will be processed, and you will receive an email with further directions at that point if you are approved to take the exam. We will refund the original payment if the application is denied.
  5. Email exams@math.gatech.edu with questions or concerns.
