Minor in Mathematics

We are so glad you are thinking of adding a math minor!

The Math minor documents your in-depth knowledge of mathematics and analytical reasoning skills that the study of mathematics promotes as a complement to your degree in another field.

To fulfill the requirements of the Minor in Mathematics, you must complete 15 hours, chosen from the following courses:
  • MATH 2106 (this course is not required unless you wish to take courses for which it is a prerequisite)
  • Any other MATH course at the 3000 level or higher
In addition, you should note the following rules and requirements:
  • A maximum of 3 credit hours in each of the following categories may be included in the minor:
    • Special Topics courses (MATH 4801/4802/4803))
    • Undergraduate Research credit (MATH 4699)
    • Credit earned by an Advanced Standing Examination
    • Transfer Credit (this includes courses taken at another institution or credit earned through the AP or IB program, assuming the scores meet Georgia Tech minimum standards.)
  • No Special Problems/reading courses (MATH 4999) or Internship coursework may be used to satisfy the course requirements for a minor.
  • Courses required by name and number for your major may not also be counted toward the minor. It is at the discretion of each major whether any optionally required course may double count towards a minor. CS majors are generally only allowed to double count free electives toward a math minor.
  • All courses used to satisfy the course requirements for a minor must be completed with a grade of C (2.00) or better, and must be taken in letter grade mode if possible.
  • No student may count multiple courses covering similar material towards the minor. Most commonly, at most one course in each of the following lists can be counted:
    • Probability and Statistics: MATH 3215, 3235, and 3670. Further, no student may hold credit for more than one of these courses, so students whose major requires a prob/stats course are advised to consult an advisor before enrolling in a course if they wish to apply one of these courses towards the math minor.
    • Linear Algebra: MATH 3406 and MATH 4305
  • Every student must satisfy the general Institute requirements for a minor in addition to the above.

Please note that major restrictions may be in place at some points in the registration process. Math minors do not receive priority registration for math courses, and must wait until any major restrictions are dropped to register. More information can be found on our Permits and Waitlists Page. You may also wish to consult the Projected Schedule of undergraduate math courses.

If you have any questions about the minor or would like to confirm that your intended course of study will satisfy the requirements, please contact the math minor advisor, Dr. Kalila Lehmann. To add or remove a math minor, you should send the form found on the Registrar's website through DocuSign to your major advisor and Dr. Lehmann.
